It performs best in USDA zones 7–11 as a cold hardy gardenia, with extra winter protection helpful at the colder end of its range. Choose a sheltered spot away from harsh wind and sudden temperature swings. In colder winters, mulching and covering during freezes can reduce damage.
Provide full sun to partial shade, ideally morning sun with afternoon shade in hotter climates. More light generally supports better flowering, but intense afternoon heat can stress the gardenia plant. Consistent moisture also helps the plant handle brighter exposures.
Plant it in moist, well-drained, acidic soil enriched with organic matter to support healthy roots and strong blooms. Amending with compost and using pine bark mulch can help maintain the acidity many gardenia varieties prefer. Avoid waterlogged areas to reduce the risk of root rot.
