Most ornamental grasses are beautiful. Fire Dragon is unforgettable. All summer long, its slender green blades build into a graceful, arching mound that reaches 6–7 feet tall. Then fall arrives and everything changes — the foliage ignites into vivid reds and oranges while silvery-white plumes rise above the canopy and catch the light like flames. This is the plant that transforms an ordinary fall landscape into something people slow down to look at. Whether you use it as a bold specimen, a natural privacy screen, or a dramatic border anchor, Fire Dragon delivers a seasonal show that no other grass can match.

How tall does Fire Dragon Maiden Grass get?
At maturity, Fire Dragon reaches 6–7 feet tall with a spread of 4–5 feet. It forms a graceful, arching mound that provides substantial presence and privacy in the landscape.
When does the fall color appear?
The foliage begins transitioning to vivid reds and oranges in early to mid-fall, typically September through October depending on your zone. The color intensifies as temperatures drop and is most dramatic in full sun.
When does it bloom?
White tassels emerge in late summer and mature into silvery-white plumes in fall. The plumes persist through winter, providing months of movement and visual interest.
Is Fire Dragon Maiden Grass deer resistant?
Yes. It is reliably deer resistant, making it an excellent choice for landscapes in areas with heavy deer pressure.
Is it pet friendly?
Yes. Fire Dragon Maiden Grass is considered pet friendly and safe for family landscapes.
Is it invasive?
Invasiveness depends on your region and local conditions. Some Miscanthus sinensis types can self-seed in certain areas. To reduce risk, remove spent plumes before seed fully matures and check with your local extension office if you are planting near natural areas.
What hardiness zones does it grow in?
Zones 4–9, covering the vast majority of the continental United States.
How much sun does it need?
Full sun — at least 6 hours of direct sunlight per day. Full sun produces the most intense fall color, the strongest growth, and the best plume display. Shade significantly reduces the red and orange pigmentation.
Is it drought tolerant?
Yes, once established. Water regularly during the first growing season to help it get established. After that, it handles dry conditions well with only occasional supplemental irrigation.

Note: The images and videos on our site are the best way to show off our products and show how good we are as growers. Depending on the season you buy, you may get a plant that is smaller or bigger than the picture shows. The plant might bloom like it does on our site, but it might not. We cut off the blooms most of the time because they don't ship well. When you buy our plants, think of them as an investment in your future garden, and enjoy the process of seeing it grow to its fullest.
